Collaborations and Community Projects

Apart from running the solo exhibitions in the gallery (please see below or here for gallery events listings), we will be working with local partners and groups to host a broader range of events which reflect the interests and passions of the folk in our community. At our first event in March, we were visited by the year 11 art class from South Dartmoor Community College. The students met artist and Field System friend Gary Winters, who talked with them about his practice, becoming an artist and the importance of creativity. We look forward to welcoming the class back repeatedly over the academic year to interact with different artists, and we will be hosting an exhibition of the students work from 11th to the16th July 2024.

We are very excited to announce that our next collaborative event will be on Friday the 26th and Saturday the 27th April 2024, with our friends at Gnash Comics. They will be taking over the gallery and presenting a behind the scenes’ exhibition of work by Devon-based international comic artists Jock, Lee Garbett, and Dom Reardon. The show features original artwork for the three-part comic series ‘Gone’ which was created, written and illustrated by Jock, with cover art by Lee and Dom. As well as the artwork there will be exclusive publications and signings…more on this event soon!

In May, to coincide with the opening of Lucy Wright’s ‘Oss Girls exhibition, we will be co-hosting a series of folk events with our neighbours at Ashburton Arts Centre

At the exhibition opening on May Day (Wednesday 1st May!), members of the Ashburton Community Folk Orchestra, will be playing traditional songs of the season at the Field System gallery. On Saturday 4th May 2024, Ashburton Arts Centre will host ‘Oss Girls and Morris Men: Folk Reimagined and Retold’. This event will feature a talk from Lucy and a screening of Tim Plester’s film Way of the Morris. Then, on Sunday 5th May 2024, Lucy will be hosting a Hedge Morris workshop; this will be followed by a performance in the evening from harp and electronica duo FitkinWall, internationally-renowned purveyors of dark, fragmented folk. Capacity is limited for these events but you can book in advance via Ashburton Arts Centre here and there will be more Beltane infused activities taking place throughout the week at Field System.

And there is still more to come later in the year! In June we are delighted to be supporting the local community arts group, Ashburton Artisans, with the Ashburton Arts Trail around our small but beautiful Devon town. We will be showing the work of Dartmoor artist Rachel Phillpott and be the first venue on the trail where everyone can pick up their Ashburton Arts Trail maps. Then, in the Autumn, we will be working with the  N.E.W. group of contemporary artists on an exciting community based project.

But could we do more?  We want to make art available to those who seek something tangible and enriching. We want to encourage conversation and connection within our local community, to inspire new creatives and offer the benefits of engaging with the arts to those from ALL walks of life. If you know a group that would benefit from working with us and the artists and makers we are exhibiting, please get in touch.
