Photographer Kate Mount brings her beautiful yet poignant photographs of abandoned domestic spaces in Co. Mayo to our Long Gallery.
"I first visited Achill Island, Co. Mayo with my grandmother in 1960 when I was a child. The place made a deep impression on me as it was so different from anything I knew in England. The houses were very basic with one central room and a bedroom on either side of that room - no toilet and no bathroom. Those cottages have now been completely abandoned - sometimes looking as if the inhabitants had just walked out one day, leaving their belongings behind. For the past few years I have been documenting these cottages and in particular the hearths which were at the centre of each dwelling, and where the turf was burned that had been dug by hand from the surrounding peat bogs by the residents."
