Kate Mount, Achill Hearths

Kate Mount’s poignant, haunted series of photographs of abandoned living rooms stems from her connection with the far west of Ireland. Her mother’s family were originally from Achill Island offshore from County Mayo, which she visited for the first time as a ten-year-old in 1960, accompanied by her ancient grandmother. ‘Its strangeness made a profound, lasting impression on me,’ she says. ‘The homes were very basic – one central room with a bedroom to either side - no toilet, no bathroom. For good reason, many have long since been gutted and rebuilt, but quite a few are still standing, some uncannily intact as if the inhabitants just walked out one day, leaving their belongings and their island roots behind. Over recent years, I’ve been documenting the remains – in particular the fireplaces that used to be at the heart – physical and symbolic – of the lives of the families who occupied them.’ A list of available work is HERE.
