In her first solo exhibition, S I L V E R S H A D O W S: Maternal and Prenatal Awakenings, artist Ruby Bateman journeys through the passion of motherhood and honours the wisdom of prenates.

In the Western world we do not widely acknowledge the sensory consciousness of life in the womb. Its memory held implicitly in the body and psyche, often passing down for generations. Using Jungian and psychotherapy philosophies, Ruby explores the shadowy world of the unconscious, and the echoes of womb and birth, reflecting both personally and as a collective.

This new series of drawings and paintings meditate on our origin story with the mother and beyond. Ruby shares her own soulful encounters with loss and grief, but also tender gratitude and joy.

Ruby Bateman is a visual artist working from her home studio in the South West countryside. Her practice is deeply heartfelt, relying exclusively on natural, non-toxic materials for her paintings and drawings. Using a richly colorful and symbolic visual language, Ruby explores themes of loss, grief, implicit memory, and somatic wisdom, drawing healing from plants, nature, ritual, and shared vulnerability. Her artwork interweaves Jungian psychotherapy, folklore, mythology, maternal politics, and the visionary work of William Blake. These influences serve as expansive resources that deepen her sense of self, framing art-making as an essential dialogue with inner consciousness.
