Sophie Wakes’s contemplative practice is shaped by meditation and ancient tree tea ceremony. Drawing on shamanism, rock art, and early clay traditions, she creates instinctive oil and gouache works that explore raw human emotion and spiritual awakening. Her work has been recognised through multiple awards, including selection by Grayson Perry for the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition and the 2025 Exeter Contemporary Open.
The artworks in the VESSEL exhibition have been created to question the very idea of containment, exploring the metaphorical idea of humans as fragile containers for spiritual awakening.
In this latest collection of paintings, drawings, and sacred earth forms, Sophie explores where boundaries soften and transformation occurs. The tension of inside and outside, suggesting a permeability of boundaries where neither state fully defines and both coexist in fluid exchange and ultimate, absolute unity.
